Four legged friend brings joy to patients

Patients at Galariinbaraay Medical Centre in Collarenebri have a new four legged friend to help on their health journey.

Wally, an 18 month old Border Collie, had his first day in the office as he continues training as a Therapy Dog. His handlers Mel Press and Roie Caine says he his perfect for his new role.

"Wall loves people and is very kind and gentle. He is being trained to assist patients and staff in a wide range of situations in our clinic including distress, anxiety and general wellbeing."

Research has shown many benefits for patients who engage with therapy dogs, including:

• Enhanced self-esteem

• Improved cognitive health

• Improved communication skills

• Improved energy levels

• Lower risk of depression, associated with increased oxytocin levels

• Lower risk of heart failure due to lowered blood pressure and cholesterol

• Reduced confusion

• Reduced risk of insomnia

• Reduced muscle tension

Wally will be making regular visit to the clinic and looks forward to cheering you up if you're having a ruff day!
